Shafiul Islam Shuhas was born 6 October 1989) is a Bangladeshi cricketer. A right-arm fast-medium bowler,After taking five wickets on debut, he very nearly steered his side, Rajshahi Division, to an improbable win with the bat. Islam’s abilities with the new ball soon made the Bangladesh talent spotters take note. An average of just over 25 in his first two seasons on the benign tracks of Bangladesh, and injuries to senior pacemen including Mashrafe Mortaza, earned the youngster a call-up to the national ODI squad for the home tri-series against India and Sri Lanka. He made his debut against Sri Lanka in the opening game of the series in January 2010.

He got his first international call up in January 2010 for Bangladesh’s tri-series with India and Sri Lanka. He opened the bowling with Rubel Hossain on his debut against the Lankans but did not make such an impact going for 39 runs in 5 overs. His first international wicket was that of former Sri Lankan skipper, Kumar Sangakkara. He was picked up for Bangladesh’s Test series against India later that month. He only picked up one wicket in his first Test, getting the wicket of Gautam Gambhir in the second essay. In the 2011 World Cup, Islam enjoyed his most successful moment, taking Bangladesh to what seemed like an unlikely win against England. Islam shared a superb 58 run stand for the ninth wicket to take Bangladesh to a win. After the match, Bangladesh fans chanted ‘Shafiul is the real hero’. After the match, Shafiul and Mahmudullah were given 1 million Bangladeshi taka for their match-winning partnership.

Bangladesh hosted the 2011 World Cup in February, March, and April along with India and Sri Lanka. Shafiul Islam was selected in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad. On 11 March, Shafiul Islam shared in a 58-run partnership for the ninth wicket to help Bangladesh to victory over England by two wickets. After the match, Bangladesh fans chanted “Bangladesh, Bangladesh Shafiul is the real hero”. After the match, Shafiul and Mahmudullah were given 1 million taka for their match-winning partnership. Imrul Kayes was named man of the match, although he opined that “The last match Man-of-the-Match award was given to me but I did not deserve it. It was Shafiul who should have got it.” The captain, Shakib Al Hasan praised Shafiul’s performance and his bowling in the following match against the Netherlands..A foot injury meant Shafiul missed both the Tests against the West Indies in November 2011.
