The ball contracts on impact and then expands as it begins to fly for the briefest of minutes. The latest Callaway Chrome Soft, updated for 2022 with precise technology for ultra-tight dispersion, is designed to provide the high handicapper with a great, all-purpose pellet. It is intended for a wide spectrum of players and features a revolutionary Hyper Elastic SoftFast Core for tour-level speed, spin, and control. Because this ball is so new, there aren’t many reviews, but the technology appears to be promising.
Vice Pro Soft Golf Balls
Best for the Distance Challenged
Vice Golf may not have the long-standing reputation of Callaway or the high-tech reputation of Mizuno, but this relative newcomer to the golf world is already producing some of our favorite balls. Vice Golf seeks to appeal to every player, from high to low handicappers, with varied core designs and covers, whether he or she is searching for distance, spin, or gentle landings. The Pro Soft compresses more on contact and provides extra distance off the tee. They can be more difficult to manage around the greens, as with other soft golf balls. As a result, high handicap players obtain more distance, while low handicap players may have more difficulty with shot-making.
TaylorMade TP5X
Best for All-Purpose Game Improvement
TaylorMade touts the 2021 TP5X for its “full performance,” which includes a redesigned dimple pattern to optimize ball flight and a five-layer structure for a soft feel. When a golf ball is described as “soft,” it does not imply that it is something a dog chews on when bored. It denotes that the ball is intended to land and grasp. The physics of a “soft” ball means that it will still start flight with sufficient compression, but it will not bounce strongly skyward when that flight ends.
